In wet areas, the floor and walls must be sealed against water. Without a thorough waterproofing, moisture can drain under the material and damage the substrate in the long term.
It is therefore always advisable to apply paintable sealants directly to concrete, plaster and other substrates. You should also seal corner areas, floor drains, shower trays and tub slopes with a waterproof material.
Sealing - indispensable when tiling wet rooms
Before a perfect bonded seal can be laid, it is essential to first optimally prepare the substrate. The first step when laying tiles is therefore always to clean the surface so that no non-adherent components such as dust and dirt remain. Separating substances such as fat must also be completely removed. Holes and bumps in the substrate should be closed and straightened with an appropriate primer. To stabilize the subsurface, a deep subsurface is also suitable, which brings the suction behavior of the subsurface to a consistently same level.
Sealing of the surfaces and detail points
The primer of the substrate must dry out overnight before the waterproofing can be applied. The surfaces are treated with the bonded waterproofing in two consecutive coats using a roller or brush method. After the first coat, it is necessary to wait about 3 hours so that the material can dry off and darken. Sealing tape, sealing foil and fabric tape are used to optimally seal exposed points such as corners and edge areas. After pressing into the first, fresh sealing coat, the second coat is painted over. This creates a joint and seamless seal.
Tile laying on an optimal substrate
After the waterproofing layer has dried out, which takes around 12 hours at normal room temperature, the tiles can be laid. In particular, in the splash water area of ??baths and showers, this prevents leaky joints, ducts and drains from causing moisture damage. In addition to the bonded seal, the sealing tape also helps ensure that areas where water damage occurs, are perfectly protected. The spreadable sealing compound underneath the tile layer is sufficient as a problem solution for areas subject to less stress. The simple system of paintable surface waterproofing, as well as the quick detail creation, ensure a low expenditure of time and material. With a seal carried out in this way, long-term adhesion of the tile covering is guaranteed. A long life of the tiles can only be guaranteed if the substrate has been optimally prepared and the sealing steps have been carried out precisely.
